Game Summary: The Beavers concocted an exciting come from behind victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader. It wasn't easy, and it looked like the Beavers were dead in the water until late in the game. The Bulldogs took a 1st inning lead when pitcher Jordan Pellett, who had walked, scored when Cumberland pitcher Nolan Scheps struckout Jeb Jenkins. However the ball was in the dirt and blocked nicely by catcher Beau Bergstrom... but Bergstrom threw wildly to 1st, pulling Mike Forster off the bag and allowing Jenkins to reach and Pellett to score. He got Luke Hellmann to ground out to avoid further damage. Pellett was in complete command as a pitcher, allowing no hits in the first three innings. Boyceville increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third. Scheps walked Corey Larson, Ryan Bloom singled, and Pellett smacked a three run homer to right field. Scheps got out of the inning with no further damage. The Dogs went up 5-0 in the fourth when Scheps allowed a two out walk to Corey Larson. Ryan Bloom, only a freshman, tripled to RF to drive in Larson. Bloom would go 6 for 8 on the day at the plate. The Beavers finally got on the board in the fourth. After Tommy Zappa struck out, DH Mitch Blaser got Cumberland's first hit of the day... a soft single to CF. Forster struckout, and Graham Miller reached on an error by RF Luke Hellmann. Miller hit the ball hard, but Hellmann had it in his glove, only to drop it. Bergstrom then hit a soft grounder in front of the mound, but Pellett misthrew to first, allowing Blaser to score. After 2B Graham Severson walked, he got Sam Clark to strikeout to end the threat. Boyceville took a 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth. CF Kyle Nelson led the inning off with a double, and scored on a throwing error by Clark. But then the fun started. The Beavers would put up five in the home half of the sixth, knocking Pellett out of the game in the process. Miller struck out to start the inning, but Bergstrom drew a walk, Severson singled, and Sawyer FollansbeeDelong, hitting for Clark, walked to load the bases. SS Adam Bielmeier singled in a run, and Scheps singled hard to LF, to drive in two more. Zappa drew a walk to reload the bases. Corey Larson came in to relieve Pellett who had thrown 140 pitches. Blaser grounded hard to shortstop, but Bloom bobbled the ball and all hands were safe. He struck out Brady Rose, who was hitting for Forster to get the 2nd out. Miller, batting for the 2nd time in the inning, drew a walk, sending home Vaughn Waite (who was running for Scheps) with the tying run. Bergstrom popped out to 1B but the score was tied. Scheps walked the bases loaded and simply ran out of gas in the top of the 7th. With two outs in the inning, Clark was sent back into the game to get out of the jam, and he did by striking out 2B Austin Galloway in six pitches, and getting credit for the win because of what the Beavers did in their half of the seventh inning. Larson wasn't able to record a single out in the 7th. Severson singled to lead off the inning, getting his 2nd hit on the day. Clark failed to bunt him over in three attempts and was out on strikes. Bielmeier got his 2nd hit of the day and Scheps drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Zappa "drove" in the winning run, drawing a four pitch walk, capping the comeback. |
