Game Summary: The Beavers hosted Hayward, the 5th ranked team in Wisconsin, in what would end up to be a 3 hour, 47 minute marathon at Islander Park on Saturday. Unusual shoddy Cumberland defense allowed Hayward to jump to leads of 5-1 and 7-3, but a dramatic four run sixth by the Beavers would send the game to extra innings. Starting Cumberland pitcher Tommy Zappa threw a walk to Hayward's Connor Sabin to lead off the game. Nick Hastedt reached on an error by 3B Sam Clark. Zappa walked Hayward catcher Josh Meade to load the bases with nobody out, and it looked like this could get away early. He got Deric Tingo to pop out to 1B Mike Forster, and the Beavers narrowly missed doubling up Matt Clark. Clark beat out the relay throw from SS Nolan Scheps, scoring Sabin. Tom Danczyk singled in Hastedt, but Zappa struck out DH Pete Freund to limit the damage to two runs. Zappa threw scoreless 2nd and 3rd innings, but was lifted in favor of Scheps because of a high pitch count. Freund led the inning off with a routine fly ball to CF Brady Rose who dropped the ball, allowing him to reach. Pitcher Cory Peterson bunted him to 2nd base. Scheps then walked Brendin Rogers. With one out, Sabin doubled in both runners. He got Hastedt to fly out to Rose, but then walked Meade, Tingo, and Clark in order, forcing in a run. Danczyk grounded out Graham Severson at 2B to end the inning. The Beavers finally got on the board with a single run in the fourth. LF Graham Miller drew a lead off walk. After Clark struck out, Rose walked, and Scheps reached on a fielder's choice, beating the throw to 1B. Miller scored on the play. Forster walked, but Severson struck out to end the inning. Hayward pushed the lead to 7-3 in the fifth, again with the aid of a dropped fly ball... this time by Zappa playing RF. Scheps got Freund to pop to short for one out, but then walked Peterson and Rogers. After Sabin popped out to C Beau Bergstrom, Hastedt flew to RF where Zappa committed the error. Scheps got dangerous hitter Josh Meade to pop out to Forster to keep the Canes at seven. Then the late inning dramatics started, with the Beavers scoring twice in the fifth. Bergstrom led off with a single, the Beavers first hit of the game. Zappa and Blaser walked to load the bases. Sawyer FollansbeeDelong singled, driving in Bergstrom. Clark drew a bases loaded walk. Walker Van Dixhorn came in relief of Peterson, and struck out Rose, Scheps, and Forster, none of whom swung at the third strike. Forster's strike three came on a full count and was controversial because of the lowness of the pitch. Scheps held the Canes in check in the sixth. The Beavers came out in the sixth and would score four times to tie the game. Severson led off with a double. Bergstrom swung at a strike three pitch that eluded Meade, and reached 1B when Meade tried to get Severson going to third. Zappa grounded to 2B, but Sabin dropped the relay throw to turn the double play. Blaser struck out, but FollansbeeDelong delivered with a two RBI double. Clark singled in FollansbeeDelong. Van Dixhorn got Rose to ground into a fielder's choice. After Rose stole second, he walked Scheps. Forster lined hard to RF, but the ball was snagged by Rogers to keep the score tied. Both teams then brought in their aces... Tom Danczyk for the Hurricanes and Graham Miller for the Beavers. Both pitchers pitched five innings of scoreless baseball. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off the cart for the Beavers in the 12th. Hayward scored seven times on three hits, four walks, and an error. Severson led off with a single in the bottom of the 12th, but Danczyk got the next three hitters out to get the win. Because both High Schools had prom, it was agreed that game 2 of the double header would be suspended after 4:30. The Beavers trail in that game 11-3, going into the 6th inning. The game will be made finished in late May. JV Summary: Cumberland got a dramatic come from behind victory, winning 8-7 after trailing 7-1. Travis Nyhus pitched two innings for the Beavers, allowing three in the 1st and four runs in the 2nd. Vaughn Waite pitched the final five innings, allowing no Hurricane runs. The Beavers got five runs in the 3rd aided by back to back doubles by Adam Bielmeier and Waite, and singles by Jake Richie and Eric Nyhus. Bryce Sebens and DJ Cifaldi drew walks in that inning. The Beavers tied the game in the fourth when Waite reached on a two-out error. He stole 2nd, 3rd, and then scored on a double steal executed by him and Cifaldi, who had walked while he was on third. The got a run in the 7th when Cifaldi reached on an error to lead off the inning. He got to 2B on a passed ball, advanced to 3B on a Mike Harris ground out, and with two outs, Travis Nyhus grounded to the Hayward pitcher, who threw it over the first baseman's head, allowing Cifaldi to score. The JV record stands at 3-0. |
