Game Summary: Cumberland had looked like it had passed an opportunity for a sweep by bad defense and missed opportunities on offense. They trailed 9-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, but erupted for eight runs on 10 hits in the two innings to get a walk off victory. Lefty sophomore Tommy Zappa took the hill for the Beavers and was immediately greeted rudely by 2B Kyle Standon who led the game off with a double. RF Nick Lahti reached on an error by SS Nolan Scheps. SS Donnie Hissa followed it by a single. Zappa struck out three of the next four hitters to get out of further trouble. The Beavers answered with one of their own in the home half of the first. Zappa singled and scored on a single by CF Graham Miller. The Beavers were the home team even though the game was played in Oulu, because all Heart O'North conference doubleheaders are designated as each team having one "home" game. Cumberland fell behind 6-1 in the third, and Zappa got knocked off the mound in the process. Hissa led the inning off with a single, Follis walked, Lindsey singled, and C Jake Tokar doubled. Nolan Scheps came in relief and gave up a single to Lundeen. He struck out 3B Cody Kontny, CF Zac Vantil, and got Standen to groundout to him to end the threat. The Beavers got one back in the third when Bielmeier singled with one out, followed by a Zappa walk. After Blaser flew out to RF, Miller got his second hit and RBI of the day with two outs. Scheps lined up the middle, but Lundeen was able to deflect the ball with his foot to Standen playing 2B, and saved two runs. It was a big blow to the Beavers who remained down four runs. Zappa made a spectacular running catch in the deep CF in the fifth, doubling off Jon Lundeen, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to keep the status quo. Disaster struck in the sixth and seemingly put the game away for the Tigers. Nine-hole hitting Zach Vantil fouled to RF, but Miller dropped the ball. Then he grounded to 1B Mike Forster, who let the ball go between his legs, reaching on a double-error. Standen followed it by a single, who was replaced by Lahti who reached on a fielder's choice. The Beavers elected to walk Hissa intentionally. Scheps struck out Follis, but LF Mike Lindsey pounded a three-run double to the LF gap, giving the Tigers a 9-2 lead in top of the sixth. Scheps struck out Tokar to get out of the inning. Then, fireworks. Clark led the sixth off with a single, followed by a Forster double. Severson singled in Clark, knocking out Lundeen. The Tigers brought in Tim Follis, the losing pitcher in Game 1 to pitch. Vaughn Waite, hitting for LF Saywer FollansebeeDelong, grounded hard to SS, scoring Forster and getting his varsity RBI. Fellow freshman Adam Bielmeier followed it up with his second single, followed by a Zappa single to load the bases. Beau Bergstrom singled hard to LF, scoring Waite and Bielmeier. Miller drew a walk. Scheps struck out looking for the inning's second out, and Clark grounded out hard to SS Hissa to end the inning. But the Beavers were back in it, cutting the deficit to 9-7. Bielmeier came into pitch the 7th, and gave up a bomb-double to Lundeen to start the inning. He got Kontny to fly out CF and walked Vantil to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Lead off hitter Kyle Standen lined hard to 1B Mike Forster, who speared the line drive and stepped on 1B for a double play. Forster led off the 7th with a hard single, which was followed by a Graham Severson single, his fourth hit of the day. Sawyer FollansbeeDelong laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to push runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out. Follis struck out Bielmeier looking for the 2nd out, but Zappa came up big with a slicing double down the LF line to tie the score, driving in two runs. Bergstrom followed, singling hard to LF, scoring Zappa, for the walk off base hit and conference doubleheader sweep. The Beavers go to 9-7 overall. |
