Game Summary: Cumberland's Graham Miller and Spooner's Sam Holden locked up in a classic pitcher's duel at a very cold and blustery Spooner park on Monday night. Miller would scatter six hits, strike out 11 Rails, while walking none, giving up the game's only run in the fourth. Holden allowed just one hit, but walked seven while striking out nine to get the shutout victory. The Beavers had several chances to score, but the Rail defense was up to the task. The Beavers loaded the bases in the first inning with Miller coming to bat. He was hit in the helmet by the pitch, but the home plate umpire ruled that the ball had instead hit his bat. Unfortunately for the Beavers, the arbitor didn't change his mind, and Miller struck out on the next pitch. In the third, RF Tommy Zappa drilled a line drive to RF that was speared by Alex LaPorte, denying him an extra base hit. The Beavers best chance to score was in the sixth, again with the bases loaded with two outs. LF Sawyer FollansbeeDelong hit a soft sinking line drive to right field that 2B Greg Schullo made a fine running grab on to hold the lead for the Rails. The Rails scored in the fourth when C Brandon Shutt, getting his 2nd hit of the day, led off with a single. After advancing to 2B on a passed ball, he scored on a Sam Holden single. T. Scheffel, the Rails DH, also had two hits on the afternoon. JV Summary: The Beavers won their first game of the year 18-10, behind a strong 13-hit performance, led by Vaughn Waite. Waite was 3x5 with two doubles, and five runs batted in... which included a bases-clearing double that shorthopped the centerfield fence. Catcher Ryan Behling was 2X4 with five runs scored, and infielder Bryce Sebens scored six times on a 2X3 performance. CF Eric Turcott went 2X4 with a double. RF Jake Ritchie went 2X3 with a run batted in as well. Mike Harris and Fabien Dimmers each had a base hit. Waite got the pitching win, striking out six. Travis Nyhus got the three inning save. |
