Game Summary: The Beavers would win the Amery Tournament with an extra-inning win over the hosts, pounding out 14 hits. In the first, the Beavers jumped to an early lead when 3B Nolan Scheps hit a one-out single. CF Tommy Zappa followed up with a single of his own. After RF Brady Rose struck out, P Graham Miller would help his own cause by driving in Scheps. Zappa got thrown out at the plate well defended by Amery. The Beavers added four more in in third to take a 5-0 lead. 2B Ryan Behling led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a single by SS Adam Bielmeier. Scheps singled again, driving in Behling. Zappa hit into a fielder's choice, narrowly avoiding being the victim of a double play. Bielmeier scored. After Rose struck out, Miller doubled to the gap, driving in Zappa. LF Sawyer FollansbeeDelong doubled himself, scoring Zappa. 1B Mitch Blaser struck out to end the inning. Miller pitched four innings of shut out ball, allowing only two hits and one walk while punching out 10 Warriors. Amery got on the board in the fifth when P Gabe Paulson led off with a single off Scheps, who took over on the mound for Miller. The Beaver coaching staff was trying to limit his, and Scheps, innings, as it was their first game of the year. Anyway, C Steve Bielmeier (cousin of Beaver SS Adam Bielmeier) singled, as did SS Kurt Gerhman, to load the bases. CF Carl Lee drove in Paulson with a fielder's choice. Scheps settled down and struck out Maloney and got Mullendore to ground out to Behling. The Warriors tied the game with a four run sixth inning. 3B Mike Harris committed an error, allowing Brandon Anderson to reach to lead off the inning. Scheps then hit Hendrickson with a pitch. Joe Rubenzer drew a walk, loading the bases with nobody out. Paulson drove in Anderson, leaving them loaded with no outs and down by only three runs. Bielmeier grounded out to Behling for the first out, and then SS Kurt Gehrman tripled, driving in two runs, tying the game. Scheps got Lee to ground out to Bielmeier with the infield in, and then got Maloney to line out to Bielmeier to leave the score tied. The Beavers got a runner with two outs in the seventh when 1B Mitch Blaser reached on a single that was ruled a trapped catch by CF Carl Lee. Bergstrom struck out, sending the game to extra innings. The Warriors flew out three consecutive times to CF Tommy Zappa, who seemed to be in the right position, possibly aided by the Beaver coaching staff armed with a pretty-good scouting report. Paulson, who pitched out of several jams while allowing 12 hits, was lifted in favor of Jared Nelson. Nelson walked Behling on four pitches, and then allowed a double to Bielmeier to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. With the infield in, Scheps grounded hard to 3B Maloney who threw out Behling at the plate. Bielmeier advanced to 3B. The Amery coaching staff decided to pitch to Zappa with a base open, and Zappa made them pay by lining a hard base hit to RF, winning the game as Bielmeier scored. Again, despite five errors, the Beavers won due to timely hitting and great pitching. Cumberland hosts Spooner Monday night in a Conference opener at Islander Park. They then host Frederic at Islander Park on Tuesday, and travel to Hayward Thursday afternoon to take on the Hurricanes in a double header. Hayward is the #2 ranked team in the State in DII. Errors: Mullendore, Bielmeier, Miller, Harris, Bergstrom, Scheps. |
