Game Summary: The Beavers were able to win the final game of the Island City Tournament with the helps of lots of walks from Bruce pitchers in what would become a come from behind victory. Cumberland took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd. RF Graham Miller got hit by a pitch from Bruce freshman Mitch Johnson to lead off the inning. After 3B Tim Carlson lined out, C Beau Bergstrom and 1B Mitch Blaser came through with consecutive singles, loading the bases. Johnson then walked in a run by throwing a free pass to LF Sawyer FollansbeeDelong. After RF Ryan Behling struck out, SS Adam Bielmeier singled home two runs. 2B Nolan Scheps flew out to CF to end the inning. The Raiders cut it to 3-1 in the third. Starting pitcher Tommy Zappa allowed one out doubles to cousins Mitch and Kyle Johnson. After walking lead off hitter Ryan Wallace and SS Bubba Gudis, he got dangerous senior CF Ryan Gerber to foul out on a great grab by C Beau Bergstrom. He then struck out 1B Luke Tesky to strand three. The Beavers got single runs in third and fourth to push their lead to 5-1. Zappa led off with a walk and eventually scored on a Tim Carlson sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Behling led off with a walk and scored by more or less manufacturing the run all by himself. Gerber, who had relieved Johnson, threw wildly into RF trying to pick him off 1B... Behling scampered to 3B on the error. When Bielmeier fouled out down the 1B line, Behling alertly tagged up and beat the throw home. Disaster struck in the fifth when the Raiders exploded for seven runs off Zappa. Four hits, three walks, and three costly errors contributed to the brutal inning. The Beavers cut into the lead by scoring twice in the fifth. Bergstrom and Blaser both drew walks, advanced on a Behling single, and scored when Bielmeier and Zappa walked. Bruce pushed the lead to 9-7 in the sixth by scoring an unearned run. The Beavers took the lead in the sixth, when Bergstrom and 1B Vaughn Waite drew one out walks. After FollansbeeDelong grounded out to 2B, Behling, Bielmeier and Scheps drew consecutive walks. Bielmeier gave a one out single in the seventh, but was able to retire Wallace and Gudis to end the game and get the win. Errors: Mitch Johnson, Gerber, Fecteau. Cumberland: Blaser (2), Bielmeier (2), Scheps. |
